Rayeee... even though this is not my most joyous raye, but until this breath this is certainly my most bzzz raye.. my life and time past like a whirlwind.. or maybe like duit raye.. my two weeks annual leave past in a blink. I began to think that raye might not for an adult like me, burden with overloaded job, constant deprivation of sleep but still I have to make a preparation for raye, pay my relatives a visit and spend a huge partial of budget for duit rayee.. as for a child, this festive means baju baru, kuih dan biskut, duit raye and for sure meriam.. and that's what i love most.. meriam tin, meriam tanah, meriam buluh, batang pinang, batang kelapa.. it's a must for me.. soon after breaking fast, all this meriam will be put in a test and practise blow.. only stop when muazin adzan.. after terawih all gather for puluran (moreh) and kotek'an (playing with kerutuk/kentong).. and right after that, meriam war began.. one blow will be follow by another squeak from neighbour village.. blow after blow continuosly until midnight..that is most joyous moment.. it's like winning 10 sprint races..
For a second though, raye is about winning.. it's not against anyone but ourself.. willingness, humbleness and obey to syari'e against the bad deeds in ourself.. and what great about it is everyone can be a winner, there's no judges, no use to pretend but we knows when we succeed.. So no matter how tired and sleepy I am this rayee.. deep inside me, I still alive with all flicker, all squeak and blow, with spirit of Syawal.. Journal

Ramadhan comes again.. Freshly remembered, this is the month in lunar year that i hate the most.. fast from first light until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations. On those time i not even dare to think about sex, but food and drink is something i can't hold myself of... sure that's a story 20 years ago.. at the age that i will munch a watermelon and think that i still not break my fast as long i spat it out back.. Nowadays, I understand that fasting is manifold. Allah (the God Almighty) mentioned in the Holy Book of the Muslims, Quran, that the fasting is prescribed for the believers as it was prescribed for the people before them, so that they may acquire self control and God-consciousness. Therefore, the purpose of the fasting is to develop God-consciousness, self-control, improvement of health by reducing or eliminating impurities from the body, and to become aware of the plight of the poor, hungry, and the sick. Ramadhan is a month of spiritual consciousness and high sense of social responsibility. The fulfillment of one's obligations during the month is rewarded by 70 times.
As a child pose means duit raya, baju raya and sure juadah raya but now it means more to me..as fast is most beneficial to the health, it is regarded principally as a method of self purification. By cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry as well as growth in one's spiritual life. So, let regards
this Ramadhan with as it should.. as the most joyous month.. Selamat Berpuasa..

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://barbaricruled.blogspot.com/2004/10/pose-journal.html' title='Pose.. The Fijian chief kept a stone to record each body eaten, and these were placed along his tomb in Rakiraki, northern Viti Levu (pictured). According to Udre Udre's son, the vicious leader would eat every part of his victims, preserving what he couldn't eat in one sitting for consumption later.

Cannibalism – the eating of human flesh by other humans – has fascinated society for years. "We fear the cannibal but equally we admire the symbolism of strength," says Laurence Goldman, associate professor at Australia's University of Queensland, and author of the book The Anthropology of Cannibalism.

There are many different types of cannibalism, but history suggests the bloodthirsty feat originally occurred in ancient societies primarily as a ritual practice, and less commonly because of starvation and war. In western society, however, "Cannibalism usually falls within the larger charge of murder," says Goldman.

The only person in US history ever to be convicted of cannibalism was a man called Alferd Packer. In 1874 he ate the flesh of five mining friends. Packer was sentenced to death in 1883, but after lengthy legal appeals he was released on parole in 1901. In Malaysia, I doubt if there's any case of cannibalism, but still.. never take it for granted!!.. who knows as whole of a world we've meet at that corner of life..

Brief history of Cannibal Controversies

"Cannibalism is a difficult topic for an anthropologist to write about, for it pushes the limits of cultural relativism, challenging one to define what is or is not beyond the pale of acceptable human behavior," writes Beth Conklin in her new book, Consuming Grief: Compassionate Cannibalism in an Amazonian Society [University of Texas Press].

Historically, charges of cannibalism were used by European nations to help justify their colonization efforts. As a result, many historical allegations of people eating are undoubtedly false. But the fact that such allegations were made is not sufficient grounds to conclude that all reports of cannibalism are untrustworthy and should be discounted, Conklin says.

During the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, when Europeans invaded the New World, they saw cannibalism as the quintessential expression of savagery and evil, and used this as a justification for employing violent means to subjugate native people. This theme dates back to Columbus' accounts of a supposedly ferocious group of man-eaters who lived in the Caribbean islands and parts of South America called the Caniba, which gave us the word cannibal. In the 16th century, Pope Innocent IV declared cannibalism a sin deserving to be punished by Christians through force of arms and Queen Isabella of Spain decreed that Spanish colonists could only legally enslave natives who were cannibals, giving the colonists an economic interest in making such allegations.

At the same time that Europeans were condemning various native peoples as cannibals, however, they were practicing a form of cannibalism themselves. Use of medicines made from blood and other human body parts was widespread in Europe through the 17th century. Europeans of the period consumed fresh blood as a cure for epilepsy and substances from various body parts to treat a variety of diseases, including arthritis, reproductive difficulties, sciatica, warts and skin blemishes. A primary source for this material was the bodies of executed criminals. Pieces of mummified human flesh imported from Egypt were considered a general panacea and were widely prescribed by the physicians of the day, Conklin reports.

In the New World, the mania of soldiers, missionaries, explorers and adventurers of past centuries to see a cannibal in every Indian, was followed by a counter-reaction on the part of some scholars to refute all claims of cannibalism, the French anthropologist Pierre Clastres observed several decades ago. For instance, South American scholars have pointed out that Columbus simply accepted the assertion of an unfriendly, neighboring tribe that the Caniba were man eaters without having evidence that they really were.

More recently this revisionist view was adopted by the American anthropologist William Arens at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In the book The Man-Eating Myth published in 1979, he argued that cannibalism is a myth with no clear basis in fact. Although he acknowledged that starving individuals have been driven to eat human flesh from time to time, he suggested that cannibalism may never have existed anywhere as a socially accepted practice.

Aren's argument caused cultural anthropologists and historians to review existing reports of cannibalism. According to Conklin, there is widespread agreement with Aren's assertion that many past claims of cannibalism are suspect. "William Arens made a valuable contribution in pointing out problems in historical accounts of cannibalism and in sensitizing us to the dangers of negative stereotypes of indigenous people as cannibals," Conklin says. "I have great respect for his work in that regard. But it's going too far to claim that cannibalism never existed at all, because there is substantial evidence that consuming human body parts has been an accepted practice in a number of societies in Europe, South America and elsewhere."

The Wari' case, which has been studied by Brazilian anthropologists as well, provides the best documentation of socially accepted cannibalism in recent times. It is also likely to be one of the last opportunities that anthropologists will have to study this practice in its cultural context. Wari' ethnography highlights the fact that different groups of people had a variety of motives for practicing cannibalism, ranging from love and respect to hate and anger. "If we listen to what indigenous people like the Wari' say about how they experienced funerary cannibalism," Conklin notes, "we begin to see the narrowness and ethnocentrism of our own views."

Conklin sees irony in the fact that scholars who insist that all accounts of cannibalism must be false are actually perpetuating the negative stereotypes of it. "They seem to assume that cannibalism is by definition a terrible act-so terrible, in fact, that could only have been invented by outsiders who wanted to denigrate or exoticize native peoples. A healthier, more realistic approach would be to recognize that various peoples, including western Europeans, have consumed human body substances for different reasons in different times and places. Let's try to recognize the positive, not just negative meanings of these practices," she says.

Another area of debate regarding cannibalism is whether it may spread infectious diseases. Animal studies have suggested that cannibals may be at greater risk for being infected by parasites and diseases from members of their own species than from other prey. One famous study associated human cannibalism with the spread of a fatal viral disease called Kuru in highland New Guinea. Carlton Gadjusek won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering a new category of viruses called slow viruses, which include Kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob (Mad Cow) disease. Part of Gadjusek's research was based on epidemiological research he did with anthropologists that linked the spread of a Kuru disease to the practice of funerary cannibalism. According to Conklin, serious questions have been raised about the validity of this association and she found no evidence of any disease associated with Wari' cannibalism.

Cannibalism is also controversial in the field of physical archeology. In 1992, Tim White at the University of California, Berkeley published an analysis of bones found at an Anasazi site in southwest Colorado. Using sophisticated statistical and analytical measurements, he concluded that the bones collected at the site included the remains of a 12th century cannibal meal. In 1999, Christy Turner of Arizona State University published a book presenting extensive evidence for prehistoric cannibalism at Anasazi sites. White and Turner's research has been highly praised within the field and strongly criticized by scholars who maintain that it is impossible to determine the motives of the people who appear to have cut up the bodies of a number of people, stripped off the flesh and cooked the bones in a clay pot.

Some members of the Hopi, Zuni, and other Pueblo Indian tribes, who consider themselves descendants of the Anasazi, reject these claims as misinterpretations and slurs on their ancestors, previously characterized as peaceful farmers who attained astonishing results in engineering, architecture and art. Last fall, a group of researchers added to the controversy by reporting biochemical evidence from an Anasazi site that appears to support the cannibalism hypothesis. They analyzed the fossilized remains of human excrement from a site containing butchered human bones and found evidence of myoglobin, a human enzyme that is found in muscle tissue but not in the digestive tract.

"If cannibalism did take place at Anasazi sites, it was associated with torture, murder and mutilation. That's the kind of thing that gives cannibalism a bad name," Conklin says. "To my mind, the killing and torture is more abhorrent than the alleged consumption of human flesh. And it's worlds away from the funerary practices I've studied, in which consuming the body honored the person who was eaten."
According to Conklin, the challenge is to understand each case in its own terms, in the social context within which it was practiced. With this approach, cannibalism starts to look less exotic and more like something with which other people can identify. "Wari' elders have told me they can't understand why outsiders are so obsessed with the idea of eating bodies. They say it's important to look at the whole picture of what went on in their mourning practices, not just focus on the one act of eating. I think we can learn something by listening to them," she says.

Islam Today

Islam, followed by more than a billion people today, is the world's fastest growing religion and will soon be the world's largest. The 1.2 billion Muslims make up approximately one quarter of the world's population, and the Muslim population of the United States now outnumbers that of Episcopalians. The most populous Muslim countries are Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India. The number of Muslims in Indonesia alone (175 million) exceeds the combined total in Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran, the traditional heartlands of Islam. There are also substantial Muslim populations in Europe and North America, whether converts or immigrants who began arriving in large numbers in the 1950s and 1960s. In keeping with tradition, the two main branches of Islam today are Sunni and Shiite.

Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s Islam remerged as a potent political force, associated with both reform and revolution. Given the large number of adherents, it is no surprise that Muslims incorporate a broad and diverse spectrum of positions in regard to liberalism and democracy. Some are secularists who want to disengage religion from politics. Others are reformers, who reinterpret Islamic traditions in support of elective forms of government. Still there are others who reject democracy entirely.

People of the Book

Muslims believe that God had previously revealed Himself to the earlier prophets of the Jews and Christians, such as Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Muslims therefore accept the teachings of both the Jewish Torah and the Christian Gospels. They believe that Islam is the perfection of the religion revealed first to Abraham (who is considered the first Muslim) and later to other prophets. Muslims believe that Jews and Christians have strayed from God's true faith but hold them in higher esteem than pagans and unbelievers. They call Jews and Christians the "People of the Book" and allow them to practice their own religions. Muslims believe that Muhammad is the "seal of the prophecy," by which they mean that he is the last in the series of prophets God sent to mankind. Muslims abhor the followers of later prophets. This attitude serves to explain the extreme Muslim animosity toward Bahais, followers of a nineteenth-century prophet, who in the Muslim mind is false.

Al-Quran and Tradition

The two foundations of Muslim faith are God's revelations to Muhammad, known as the Koran, from the Arabic word Qur'an, or "recitation"; and the reports about Muhammad's life and deeds, which are known as the hadith, from the Arabic word for "report." The central miracle of Islam is God's revelation to Muhammad, whose human fallibilities as a mere mortal are repeatedly mentioned in the Koran.

The revelations that comprise the Koran were revealed over a period of more than two decades in two places. The first revelations from the period of Muhammad's residence in Mecca are short and incantatory verses of extraordinary poetic beauty. The later revelations from the period after Muhammad immigrated to Medina are longer, legalistic texts appropriate to a developing community of believers in need of rules and regulations.

Muhammad and his followers initially committed the revelations to memory, but as these revelations grew in number and complexity, some were probably written down on whatever materials were at hand. After the Prophet died, his followers were pressed to preserve the purity of the revelations and began to write down as many of them as possible. According to the traditional view, a uniform written text of the revelations to Muhammad was collected and collated some twenty years after his death.

The Koran as a book is comparable in length to the Gospels. It contains 114 chapters (each called in Arabic a sura) of varying length. It opens with the Fatiha, a beautiful short prayer that serves as an invocation in many situations;

In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Praise belongs to God, Lord of all Being
the All-merciful, the All-compassionate
the Master of the Day of Doom
Thee only we serve; to Thee alone we pray for succor
Guide us in the straight path
the path of those whom Thou hast blessed,
not of those against whom Thou art wrathful
nor of those who are astray.

The other chapters of the Koran follow in descending order of length, from the 286 verses of the second chapter, known as "The Cow," to the final two chapters, which are short prayers of a few lines. The chapters are thus arranged neither in the order in which the verses were revealed nor in a narrative sequence.

The Koran, as God's literal word, can only be comprehended in the majestic and glorious Arabic language in which it was revealed. The necessity of reading the Koran in Arabic has meant that all believers should learn the language in order to understand the scriptures. This requirement has created a linguistic bond among believers, particularly as Islam spread beyond the boundaries of Arabia to regions inhabited by speakers of other languages. Having learned to use Arabic as the language of religion, the new converts also used it as a language of literature, science, commerce and social intercourse.

The primacy of Arabic as the language of God's revelation has also helped to preserve the purity of the Arabic language, for Muslims constantly call to mind the noble and magnificent words and phrases of the Koran. Although the Arabic language has evolved over the fourteen centuries since the Koran was revealed, it has not changed as much as English has changed in the six centuries since the time of Chaucer. Finally, the primacy of the Arabic language has encouraged the spread and use of the Arabic script, which is known and used from the shores of the Atlantic to the Pacific to render a variety of languages, including Arabic, Persian, Kurdish, Pashto, Kashmiri, Urdu, Sindhi, Ottoman Turkish, Chaghatay, and Malay.

The second basis of Muslim faith is the example of the Prophet. As the perfect Muslim, Muhammad served and still serves as the model for all believers. His sayings and deeds were remembered by his associates and preserved in the Traditions, known in Arabic as hadith. These Traditions normally take the form of a chain ("So-and-so heard from so-and-so, who heard from so-and-so, that the Prophet said [or did]"), followed by a report of what the Prophet said or did.

The Traditions came to be considered second in authority to the Koran and also help explain and elaborate the circumstances under which obscure passages in the Koran were revealed. The Traditions were transmitted orally for several generations before being written down, beginning in the eighth century. By the ninth century the jurist al-Shafii (d. 820) came to consider the sunna, or custom of the Prophet, the second most important root of Islamic jurisprudence after the Koran. Together the Koran and the Traditions, along with consensus and analogy, make up the sharia, the rules and regulations that govern the day-to-day lives of Muslims.

Five Pillars

In contrast to many other religions, the basic practice of Islam is simplicity itself. The believer worships God directly without the intercession of priests or clergy or saints. The believer's duties are summed up in five simple rules, the so-called Five Pillars of Islam: Belief, Worship, Fasting, Almsgiving, and Pilgrimage.

God (ALLAH)

For Muslims, God is unique and without equal. They attempt to think and talk about God without either making Him into a thing or a projection of the human self. The Koran avoids this by constantly shifting pronouns to discourage believers from inadvertently reifying God and creating any physical image of Him.

God is known in Arabic as Allah to distinguish Him from ilah, which could refer to any of the gods once worshiped in Arabia. Just as one might say in English that the French or Germans worship God, not Dieu or Gott, so one should properly say that Muslims worship God, not Allah, which is simply the word for God (with a capital G) in the Arabic language. Giving a different name to the one God worshipped by the followers of Muhammad erroneously implies that their God is different from the one God worshipped by Jews or Christians.

A Mercy For All Creatures

Mercy for Orphans

Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) was kind to all people and asked his
followers to be the same. He was especially kind to orphans and asked his
companions to be kind to them. Thauban reported Allah's Messenger as saying,
"Only supplication averts the decree (of fate), only kindness prolongs life,
and a man is deprived of provision for a fault he has committed."

Ibn Omar reported Allah's Messenger as saying, "A Muslim is a Muslim's
brother; he does not wrong him. If anyone cares for his brother's need,
Allah will take care of his need; if anyone relieves his brother's anxiety,
Allah will remove from him one of his anxieties on the Day of Resurrection;
and if anyone conceals a Muslim's secrets, Allah will conceal his secrets on
the Day of Resurrection."

Abu Hurairah reported Allah's Messenger as saying, ‘The best house among the
Muslims is one where an orphan is well treated, and the worst house among
the Muslims is one where an orphan is badly treated."

Abu Omamah reported Allah's Messenger as saying, "If anyone caresses an
orphan by moving his fingers in his hair, doing so only for God's sake, he
will have blessings for every hair over which his hand passes and if anyone
treats well ail orphan girl or boy under his care, he and I shall be like
these two in Paradise," putting two of his fingers together.

Abu Hurairah reported Allah's Messenger as saying, He who strives to serve a
widow and a poor person is like the one who strives in Allah's way." He also
reported that when a man complained to the Messenger of Allah of being
hardhearted he said, "Show affection to the orphans and feed the poor."

Mercy for Enemies & Unbelievers

Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) treated everybody, friend or foe, with
kindness and taught his companions to do likewise. It is reported by Abu
Basra Ghifari that when he was a non-believer he came to Madinah and stayed
as a guest of the Messenger of Allah. He drank milk from all his
goats at night but the Prophet did not say a word. That night he and all his
family slept hungry.

A similar incident is reported by Abu Hurairah. One night a non-believer
stayed as a guest of the Noble Prophet. One by one, he drank milk of all the
seven goats, but the Prophet did not show any sign of anger or dislike
towards him. Perhaps due to the Prophet's behaviour, next morning, the man
embraced Islam and was satisfied with the milk of only one goat.

Abu Hurairah's mother, who lived with him in Madinah was a non-believer. She
used to abuse the Noble Prophet, about which Abu Hurairah complained to him,
but he prayed for her. Bilal was very close to Prophet Muhammad and managed
his household. One day an unbeliever called him a Negro and said that he
would not rest until he had made him tend his goats for him. Prophet
Muhammad heard this conversation but did not say anything to the unbeliever.

The problem of hypocrites in Madinah was a great test for the Prophet and
his companions, but he always treated them kindly and with great
consideration. Abdullah Ibn Obayy and his followers embraced Islam, but at
heart they were unbelievers and never really accepted Islam. Their behaviour
at the time of the Battle of Uhud and on many other occasions was damaging
to the cause of Islam, but Prophet Muhammad always treated them with
kindness. When Abdullah Ibn Obayy died, Prophet Muhammad gave his cloak for
his shroud.

Jews were extremely hostile to Prophet Muhammad and his mission, but he was
always kind to them. Once he went to the house of a Jew to visit his sick
son. He invited the boy to Islam but the boy looked towards his father for
his permission. His father gave him permission and the boy embraced Islam.
Once when the funeral of a Jew was passing, the Prophet stood up as a mark
of respect for the dead. Once a Jew complained to him that a Muslim had
slapped him. He called that Muslim at once and reprimanded him.

In the valley of Hudaibiyah while Prophet Muhammad was saying the morning
prayer with his companions, seventy or eighty unbelievers came down quietly
from the mountain of Taneem in order to kill the Muslims during prayer. They
were caught and brought before him. He treated them well and released them
all.

In fact, he treated all people with kindness under all circumstances and
never showed any ill-will towards anyone or ill-treated anyone. Makhul
reported Allah's Messenger as saying, "The believers are gentle and kind
like a pliant camel which, when guided, lets itself be guided and when made
to sit, even on stones, does so." Mu’aadh said, "The last injunction Allah's
Messenger gave him when he put his foot in the stirrup was. "Treat people
well, O Muadh."

And Those who strive in Our ( Cause ) - We will certainly guide them to Our
PATHS: For verily Allah is with those who do right. I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.

2. No man or woman is worth your tears, and the one who is, won't make you cry.

3. Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

4. A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart.

5. The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them knowing you can't have them.

6. Never frown, even when you are sad, because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.

7. To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.

8. Don't waste your time on a man/woman, who isn't willing to waste their time on you.

9. Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful.

10. Don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened.

11. There's always going to be people that hurt you so what! All You have to do is keep on trusting and just be more careful about who you trust next time around.

12. Make yourself a better person and know who you are before you try and know someone else and expect them to know you.

13. Don't try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to.

REMEMBER: WHATEVER HAPPENS, HAPPENS FOR A REASON.

Let's Write in the Sand

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. In a
specific point of the journey, they had an argument, and one friend slapped
the other one in the face.

The one, who got slapped, was hurt, but without anything to say, he wrote
in the sand: "TODAY, MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE".

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where they decided to take
a bath.

If anyone cares for his brother's need,
Allah will take care of his need; if anyone relieves his brother's anxiety,
Allah will remove from him one of his anxieties on the Day of Resurrection;
and if anyone conceals a Muslim's secrets, Allah will conceal his secrets on
the Day of Resurrection."

(Qur'an 29:69)

"Oh Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I misguide others, or I am misguided by
others, lest I cause others to err or I am caused to err, lest I abuse
others or be abused, and lest I behave foolishly or meet with the
foolishness of others".
